The simplest base style of all is the straight edge.  Apply the finish of your choice, mount the model and you're done.   Need to keep the dust off a special model?  Build a plexiglas cover designed to slip over the base, drive two screws thru the plex into each long side and there you have it.

Looking for something more attractive?  Then consider a base with this cranked edge.  The upper half of the base edge is beveled back at a 22 1/2 degree angle.  While this style doesn't really lend itself to installation of a dust cover (the mounted model needs to reside in a display case), the lower part of the edge can accept screws if you're that determined.

Another option is this base that features the entire edge beveled from bottom to top at a 22 1/2 degree angle.  Very attractive, though it will not accept a dust cover.

Here you see the difference between an unfinished straight edge 2" x 2" base and the same size base with a beveled edge and finished with Deft Satin Clear Wood Finish.  Incidentally, Deft is a food safe, non-yellowing bar finish.  The Modeler's Weapons Shop uses and recommends Deft as an ideal finish.

All bases listed below are unfinished Walnut hardwood.  Any base is available finished with either Satin or Semi-Gloss Deft Clear Wood Finish for a 50% premium.
